A researcher at the Australian National University (ANU) says a good education could be a woman's best asset in a marriage, with the man's happiness likely to increase along with the level of his partner's education.

Shane Worner conducted a study based on information collected by the Department of Family and Community Services.

He found there is a difference in the male and female reactions to education in a marriage.

"For every extra year of education that a spouse has, a male is more likely to report a high... life satisfaction level, but for females, once we account for marriage we don't seem to see any effect of spousal education," he said.

Mr Worner says there is a high price tag for singles wanting to reach the same level of happiness as married people.

"We can give a sort of dollar value to the effect of happiness, and for a single person to be as happy as a married person, they would need to receive an additional $100,000 in annual income, which is I believe quite substantial," he said.
